Spence joins Tottenham on five-year deal - Spurs summer spending passes €100m under Conte

Tottenham Hotspur are set to take their summer spending past €100 million in the summer transfer window, with the signing of Middlesbrough full-back Djed Spence on a five-year deal. In a statement released on Tuesday morning, the club confirmed the signing of the young defender in a deal worth an initial €14.7m, with a further €8.8m in potential add-ons included in the deal according to reports.

Djed all but confirmed the move ahead of a confirmed announcement on Instagram, when he took to the social media platform to thank Middlesbrough fans for their support during his time at the club. “We came from the bottom and made it all the way to the top,” said the young defender. “We turned dreams into reality and I can’t thank you all enough for the special journey we all shared together. I'm looking forward to seeing you all back at the Famous City Ground. Once a Red, always a Red.”

The player, who is currently valued at €8m, makes the move to Antonio Conte’s team as the sixth major first team signing of the summer, following the arrival of Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster on free transfers, Clément Lenglet arriving on loan, along with Yves Bissouma from Brighton for €29.2m and Everton forward Richarlison for €58m. As such, Spurs will see their spending for the summer surpas €100m, while taking into account the sales of Steven Bergwijn and Cameron Carter-Vickers, which come to just under €40m in transfer income.

Such an aggresive strategy in the summer market will undoubtedly delight fans of the club, who have had to put up with a few years of stagnation that came close to Harry Kane pushing for a move away from the club last summer. Now, with Conte at the helm and a number of new signings, Tottenham are showing a clear sign of intent at making another push for the top four and success domestically and in Europe.
